Parts of the South Korean capital, Seoul, came to a standstill as tens of thousands of people
came out for the funeral of former President Roh Moo-Hyun.

Tearful supporters carried hats and balloons in yellow - the colour associated
with Mr Roh, who died a week ago after jumping from a cliff in an apparent suicide.

They turned the streets of Seoul into a sea of yellow, Mr Roh's campaign colour - they even had yellow handkerchiefs.

Roh Moo-hyun's coffin left his hometown of Bongha earlier on Friday for the funeral in Seoul, some 450km (280 miles) away.

His widow, children and close relatives led the procession from Bongha to the funeral service
in Seoul's Gyeongbok Palace, which was attended by some 3,000 people.

Many South Koreans are still in shock at the death of Roh, a human rights lawyer
from a humble farming family who came to power pledging to fight corruption.

But he became embroiled in scandal after his family was accused of taking bribes from a wealthy shoe manufacturer.
He denied any personal wrongdoing but apologised on behalf of his family.

Some supporters of the former president believe the allegations were politically motivated,
and thousands of riot police were on stand-by in the capital in case of protests.

Many people, including the opposition MP Baek Won-woo (centre), jeered when the current President,
Lee Myung-bak, approached the altar to pay his respects. He was dragged away by security guards.

Roh's body was due to be cremated after the funeral and his ashes taken back to Bongha.

Later in the afternoon, Mr Roh's supporters began to confront the thousands of riot police out on the streets of Seoul.
The huge number of mourners delayed the hearse from leaving the city.

Most people, however, remembered Mr Roh peacefully.
